Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery turn "I hope we are covered" into "we tested it last Tuesday" — and that is a partner conversation worth having.
Why This Matters Now
There are two kinds of organisations: those that have a tested backup and disaster recovery plan, and those that are about to learn — at the worst possible moment — that they do not. The good news is that helping customers move from the second group to the first is one of the most straightforward, high-value conversations a channel partner can have.
Ransomware is no longer a rare event reserved for large enterprises. It is a daily reality for businesses of every size across Africa, and attackers specifically target backups before they encrypt production data — because they know a customer with no clean backup is a customer who pays the ransom.
At the same time, regulatory and cyber-insurance pressure is rising. Insurers now routinely ask whether an organisation has immutable, tested backups and a documented recovery plan before they will write a policy. "We back up to a tape somewhere" is no longer an acceptable answer.
Microsoft continues to invest heavily here. In June 2026, Azure Site Recovery added generally available support for Windows VMs with NVMe disk controllers — extending disaster recovery to the latest high-performance VM families — and Azure Backup expanded its Threat Detection integration with Microsoft Defender for Cloud. The platform is maturing exactly as the threat landscape demands it.
What Are Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery?
These are two complementary services, and understanding the difference is the key to positioning them well.
Azure Backup protects your data. It takes secure, isolated copies of VMs, files, databases, Azure Files shares, and on-premises servers, and stores them in a Recovery Services vault or Backup vault. Backups are encrypted, support soft-delete (deleted backups are retained for 14 days free of charge), and can be replicated locally, zone-redundantly, or geo-redundantly. Crucially, the backup data lives in a Microsoft-managed tenant that external users cannot reach — so even if production is compromised, the backups survive.
Azure Site Recovery (ASR) protects your uptime. It continuously replicates running VMs and physical servers to a secondary Azure region (or from on-premises into Azure), so that when an outage hits, you fail over with minimal data loss and keep operating. Replication frequency goes as low as 30 seconds, and you can run a test failover at any time without disrupting production.
Put simply: Azure Backup gets your data back; Azure Site Recovery keeps your business running. Together they form a complete business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) strategy. Both are billed on a pay-as-you-use basis, and ASR is free for the first 31 days per protected instance.

The Partner Opportunity
BCDR is one of the easiest Azure conversations to start and one of the stickiest services to retain. Here is where the opportunity sits.
● The cyber-insurance trigger: More customers are being asked by insurers to prove they have immutable, tested backups. That requirement is a ready-made reason to engage every customer — not a hypothetical risk, but a contractual one with a renewal date attached.
● Backup assessments: Start with a simple audit. What is being backed up, how often, where is it stored, and — the question most customers cannot answer — when was a restore last tested? An untested backup is a hope, not a plan, and that gap is your engagement.
● Ransomware resilience positioning: Azure Backup’s soft-delete, immutable vaults, and Defender for Cloud threat detection give you a concrete, demonstrable ransomware-recovery story. This pairs naturally with a broader security attach motion.
● DR for on-premises customers: Many African mid-market customers still run on-premises servers with no real disaster recovery beyond a second server in the same building (which does not survive a fire, flood, or theft). ASR replicates those workloads into Azure — no secondary datacentre required. This is a high-value, low-friction first Azure project.
● Managed BCDR services: Backups need monitoring. Failover plans need testing. Recovery point objectives need reviewing. This is a natural recurring managed service — and the test-failover drill is a billable, repeatable engagement that keeps you in front of the customer.
The recurring-revenue angle is the real prize: BCDR is not a one-off sale. It is a monthly managed service with a built-in reason for quarterly reviews.
What Customers Actually Gain
For the end customer, this is ultimately about sleeping at night. After deploying Azure Backup and ASR, customers gain:
● Clean, isolated backups that survive a ransomware attack on production — stored where attackers cannot reach them.
● A tested recovery plan, not a theoretical one. Test failovers prove the plan works before a real disaster, not during one.
● No secondary datacentre to build or maintain — DR capacity in Azure is paid for only when you actually fail over.
● A clear answer for auditors and cyber insurers: immutable backups, documented retention, and demonstrable recovery capability.
● Recovery point and recovery time objectives that match the business — not whatever the old tape rotation happened to deliver.
Getting Started This Week
1. Pick three customers and ask one question: "When did you last test a full restore?" The hesitation in their answer is your opening.
2. Run a backup assessment. Map what is protected, what is not, where backups live, and the storage redundancy in place. Identify the gaps — there are always gaps.
3. Enable Azure Backup on a pilot workload using a Recovery Services vault, and demonstrate soft-delete and a successful restore in a customer meeting.
4. Scope an ASR pilot for one business-critical VM or on-premises server. Run a test failover together — nothing sells DR like watching it work without breaking anything.
