Your Users Are Working From Everywhere — Is Your Desktop Keeping Up?

Azure Virtual Desktop gives channel partners a managed, scalable cloud desktop practice — and June 2026 just made it even more compelling.

Why This Matters Now

If you've ever watched a user try to connect to a work application over a VPN, on a four-year-old laptop, from an Airbnb in Cape Town, you'll understand the problem we're solving today. The promise of 'work from anywhere' is real. The reality, without the right infrastructure, is a support ticket queue and a lot of very patient IT administrators.

Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is Microsoft's answer to this — and it's the one cloud desktop platform that most of your customers are probably already licensed for and not yet using.

Remote and hybrid work is now standard practice across African businesses, from financial services to education to manufacturing. Employees expect Windows 11 desktops, the full Microsoft 365 suite, and access to line-of-business applications — from any device, at any time. What they don't expect is to manage that themselves.

Microsoft has been investing heavily in AVD through 2025 and 2026. June 2026 alone brought the general availability rollout of RDP Multipath — a connection resilience feature that keeps user sessions alive across network disruptions — and the public preview of context-based redirections, which gives IT fine-grained control over BYOD clipboard and peripheral access. AVD Hybrid (now in public preview) extends the platform to on-premises infrastructure via Azure Arc, which is a significant development for African customers who still have on-premises servers and are not ready for a full cloud migration.

Crucially: Azure Virtual Desktop Classic will no longer be supported after September 2026. That is a live migration conversation waiting to happen with every customer still on the old platform.

What Is Azure Virtual Desktop?

Azure Virtual Desktop is a cloud-based Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) platform that delivers Windows 11 desktops and individual applications to users from Azure infrastructure. Microsoft manages the control plane — the gateway, load balancing, and session brokering — while you (or your customer's IT team) manage the session hosts, images, and user policies.

The four core components are straightforward:

● Host Pools — collections of Azure VMs (session hosts) that run user sessions. Pooled host pools are shared across multiple users; personal host pools assign dedicated VMs to individuals.

● Session Hosts — the Windows VMs where work actually happens. AVD is the only platform that supports Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session, meaning multiple users share one VM — which significantly reduces compute costs.

● Workspaces — the logical grouping that users see in their AVD client (the Windows App or Remote Desktop client).

● Application Groups — publish either full desktops or individual RemoteApp applications to specific user groups.

User profiles are handled by FSLogix, which stores roaming profile containers in Azure Files or Azure NetApp Files — meaning users get the same personalised experience regardless of which session host they land on. RDP Shortpath improves connection performance by routing sessions over UDP instead of TCP relay, reducing latency noticeably for users outside major data centres.

AVD integrates natively with Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, and the full Microsoft 365 stack — making it the logical cloud desktop for any organisation already in the Microsoft ecosystem.

WHAT'S NEW IN AVD — JUNE 2026

RDP Multipath (GA rollout): session resilience across multiple TCP paths. Context-based redirections (Preview): dynamic clipboard/peripheral control per user identity and device compliance. AVD Hybrid (Preview): deploy AVD session hosts on any on-premises hypervisor via Azure Arc. FSLogix cloud-only identity support: GA for external and cloud-only Microsoft Entra users.

The Partner Opportunity

The AVD opportunity for channel partners is one of the most underutilised in the Azure portfolio — primarily because many partners haven't yet positioned it as a service. Here's how to change that.

● Licensing audit conversations: Most customers with Microsoft 365 E3, E5, Business Premium, or Windows Enterprise E3/E5 are already entitled to Azure Virtual Desktop at no additional licence cost. That's the conversation opener: 'You're already paying for this.' Start by auditing which customers have the entitlement they're not using.

● Legacy VDI migration: Any customer still running on-premises Citrix, VMware Horizon, or Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is a migration target. These environments require hardware refresh cycles, perpetual licensing, and dedicated administration. AVD removes all three.

● AVD Hybrid as the bridge: For customers who aren't ready for full cloud — perhaps due to data sovereignty, connectivity reliability, or existing hardware investments — AVD Hybrid (currently in preview) lets them host session hosts on-premises while managing everything through Azure. This is a significant conversation for African mid-market customers.

● Managed AVD services: Once deployed, AVD requires ongoing image management, user provisioning, FSLogix profile monitoring, autoscale configuration, and patching. This is a natural recurring managed service. Partners who deploy AVD and then hand it back without a managed services wrapper are leaving revenue on the table.

● AVD Classic migration urgency: September 2026 is the end-of-life for Azure Virtual Desktop Classic. Any customer on the old platform needs to migrate now. This is a time-bound, funded project — exactly the kind of engagement that pays well and deepens the relationship.

The Autoscale feature is worth highlighting specifically: it scales session host VMs up and down based on demand, which can materially reduce idle compute costs — especially for customers with defined working hours. A well-configured autoscale policy is both a cost saving and a managed service conversation.

What Customers Actually Gain

For the end customer, AVD solves a set of problems that tend to compound quietly until they become a crisis — usually when a new employee joins, a laptop breaks, or someone needs to work abroad unexpectedly.

After deploying AVD, customers gain:

● Any device, any location — staff access the same Windows 11 desktop from a laptop, tablet, thin client, or shared PC. The experience is consistent because the session runs in Azure, not on the device.

● One golden image instead of 200 individual machines to patch, update, and manage. IT deploys an update once; all users get it on next login.

● Data stays in Azure, never on the endpoint device. For regulated industries — healthcare, financial services, legal — this is a compliance answer as much as an IT answer.

● Autoscale means the environment grows with the business and shrinks at night. Customers stop paying for idle VMs at 2am.

● New employees are provisioned in minutes. A VM in a host pool, an Entra ID account, and group assignment — done.

Getting Started This Week

1. Identify three customers with Microsoft 365 E3/E5 or Business Premium who are still on physical desktops or legacy VDI. These are your first three AVD conversations.

2. Check for AVD Classic deployments across your customer base. Any customer on the classic platform needs to migrate before September 2026 — reach out now, not in August.

3. Run the AVD quickstart in your own Azure subscription. Deploy a sample Windows 11 desktop using the Azure portal tutorial (linked below) so you can demonstrate it live in a customer meeting.

4. Review the AVD Hybrid overview for customers with on-premises requirements. This is a new and growing opportunity, especially for the African mid-market.
