4Sight OT Automation, in partnership with Calcamite, has been awarded the AVEVA Sustainability Impact Award at AVEVA World Milan 2026 — one of the industrial software industry's most prestigious recognitions for sustainable innovation. The award was voted on by delegates attending AVEVA World and presented live on the main stage in Milan.

Calcamite, South Africa’s leading wastewater treatment company with over 40 years of experience, designs and manufactures modular, small-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) that serve communities where traditional sewage infrastructure is not viable. With more than 2,000 plants installed and 2.3 million m³ of total treatment capacity, Calcamite operates in environments characterised by remote locations, limited on-site skills, and constrained funding.

The critical challenge: how do you ensure consistent, compliant operation of hundreds of plants spread across the continent — without costly site visits or specialist on-site personnel?

4Sight was engaged to design and deliver a lean, scalable, and robust remote monitoring solution — one that would mirror the modularity of Calamite’s physical plants and be reliable in low-bandwidth, off-grid environments across Africa.

The solution architecture brought together a powerful ecosystem of technology partners:

•       AVEVA Connect — scalable, open cloud monitoring and visualisation platform

•       Schneider Electric M262 Controller with 4G/LTE VPN Router — robust edge hardware for remote data collection

•       4Sight OT Automation — digital integration architecture, MQTT/JSON data structuring, bi-directional communications, and commissioning

•       Calcamite — domain expertise, modular plant design, and operational insight

The pilot was deployed at Gourikwa Nature Reserve — 1,380km from Calamite’s Gauteng factory — in just five weeks, from order to full commissioning. The plant treats 15m³ of wastewater per day and operates in an area with no specialist on-site staff.

Since the pilot in November 2025, the results have been significant:

•       5 plants connected within 5 months (3 new installations, 2 refurbishments)

•       85% reduction in maintenance costs on the pilot plant

•       195m³ of wastewater is remotely monitored per day across active plants

•       25,000km of travel avoided through remote monitoring

•       A scalable blueprint is now in place to reach 4,020 plants and 5.5M m³ treated annually by 2035
