Stream (Classic) live events are retiring soon - here’s what you need to know.
As a Microsoft customer (and partner), you may have been using Stream (Classic) live events to host and run live events as part of Microsoft 365. Stream (Classic) live events helped power live events in Teams and supported up to 10,000 simultaneous event attendees. However, Stream (Classic) live events are being retired, and you need to switch to Teams live events, with encoder support, as the new platform to host and run live events. Teams live events is the successor service to Stream live events, and it offers the same functionality and more.
In this blog post, we will explain why Stream (Classic) live events were retired, and how you can migrate your existing live events to Teams live events.
Why are Stream (Classic) live events retiring?
Stream (Classic) live events are retiring because Microsoft is merging the powerful capabilities of Stream and SharePoint to bring you native video experiences integrated across Microsoft 365. For more information, see the Stream (on SharePoint) overview.
To help in this transition, Microsoft has built a migration tool to allow IT admins to move videos from Stream (Classic) directly into SharePoint and OneDrive to take advantage of Stream (on SharePoint).
Teams live events, with encoder support, is the new platform to host and run live events. It is a service that allows you to create, host and produce live events with the same functionality that you get with Stream.
When are Stream (Classic) live events retiring?
After 31 January 2024, you will not be able to create, host, or view any Stream (Classic) live events. Any Stream live event scheduled after this date will be automatically removed.
Microsoft recommends that you begin using Teams live events to schedule and host all your live events. Additionally, if your organization has live events scheduled beyond the retirement dates, you should reschedule those events and inform attendees of the new link.
How can you migrate your existing live events to Teams live events?
To migrate your existing live events to Teams live events, you need to use the migration tool that Microsoft has provided. The migration tool can only be run by SharePoint Global Admins and can’t be used by regular users to migrate their own videos. The migration tool allows you to migrate your content on your own schedule, and to pick your own migration destinations or use the defaults provided by the tool.
The migration tool will migrate only certain pieces of critical metadata and permissions with the videos, such as title, description, transcripts, etc. The migration tool will not migrate comments, likes, views, or analytics data. The migration tool will also not migrate any live events that are still in progress or scheduled for the future.
What are the benefits of using Teams live events?
Teams live events offer several benefits over Stream (Classic) live events, such as:
- The option to allow public anonymous attendees to attend Teams encoder live events
- Enhanced playback of recorded events with the option to add closed captions, transcripts, chapters, and comments
- Support for closed captions, and multiple language tracks
- Integration with Teams, Yammer, and other Microsoft 365 apps for seamless collaboration and communication
